When applying for a job, there are various CV formats an applicant can use. These formats differ in terms of focus or content and it is important that the applicant knows which format will best give him an edge over the other applicants.
Different CV Formats
1. Performance CV
This format is considered the most popular because it focuses on the past performance and work history of an applicant. It lists the work history from the most recent to the oldest. This format usually includes an achievements section where it can highlight the impressive performance and achievements of an applicant during each of the work history listed. An applicant with remarkable achievements and work history can easily stand out using this format. Performance CV is ideal when the applicant wants to apply for a job belonging to the same line of work as his or her old job. This is also advantageous for applicants who have a good track record in their field of work.
2. Functional CV
While performance CV focuses on performance, functional CV, on the other hand, focuses on the skills of an applicant. It emphasizes the skills learned and acquired through the applicant’s various work experiences inthe past. This format is ideal for someone who has an employment gap or those who are changing careers or line of work.
3. Targeted CV

It usually contains a section for abilities and another section for achievements. This format is intended for applicants who are changing careers or those that have employment gaps.
4. Student or Graduate CV
For applicants who are still in school or for those who have just graduated from college or university, this format is more ideal to use. Student or graduate CV format contains very limited work experience and it highlights on the qualifications of an applicant which is usually the educational attainment and other experiences acquired while in school.
5. Alternative CV
An alternative CV does not follow any standard format as all of them vary in terms of style and creativity. This format is usually used by applicants who like to highlight their creativity and originality, which are also the main qualifications for the vacant job they are applying for.
