When you get called in for an interview you have to look forward to the best and you have to be prepared for the worst. This is just about the best way you can prepare yourself to ace that interview and nab that job. There are several different kinds of interview styles but one that you really need to watch out for is the behavioral interview. This is the type of interview where you will be asked questions that will help the interviewer find out how you will respond given certain employee-related situations. The logic behind such a line of questioning is that they will see how you acted the past and it gives them a glimpse as to what you will do in the future. It goes like this: past performance predicts future performance.
Behavioral interview vs. traditional interview
When talking about traditional interviews the questions you will be asked will usually have straightforward answers like “what are you weaknesses?” and “What are you strengths?” But when it comes to a behavioral interview it is a whole other ball game. For this type of interview the interviewer will already have an idea of the skills they are looking for and will ask questions to find out if you have those skills. Their behavioral questions will focus not on what you will do but on what you have done in the past.
Some questions to expect
Do bear in mind that behavioral interview questions will be more pointed and the interviewer will really probe deeper into your answers. Check out some questions below:
- Give an example of a goal you have reached and how did you achieve it?
- Cite a situation or occasion when you used logic to solve a problem
- Give an example of a time when you had to work under pressure and what did you do?
- Have you ever had to deal with a difficult situation that involved a co-worker? What did you do?
- Have you ever gone above and beyond the call of duty in your previous job? What did you do?
- What do you do when there are interruptions in your schedule? How did you handle the change?
These are just some examples of questions that you can look forward to. Be aware that for every answer you give there will be follow up questions so make sure you answer truthfully or you could get caught up in a lie.
Preparing for a potential behavioral interview

You do not really know what type of interview is waiting for you behind closed doors. Sometimes, you will be faced with a traditional interview and other times a behavioral interview. There will even be times when you will be subject to both. The best thing to do is prepare for both types of questions and practice answering some behavioral interview questions and find any angles where they could ask follow up questions. Chances are, if the answers your give are clear and detailed enough they will not even ask any follow-up questions.
